ABOUT THE WORK

Walking on Air was created live outside the Hennepin County Government Center in Minneapolis on April 20, 2021, as the city awaited the verdict in the trial of Derek Chauvin for the murder of George Floyd. Painted in real time and without knowing the outcome, the work captures the uncertainty, tension, grief, and possibility surrounding a historic American moment. More than a response to history, Walking on Air was physically present as that history unfolded, functioning simultaneously as artwork, witness, and document.
